EXCLUSIVE: Drishyam’s Inspector Gaitonde aka Kamlesh Sawant talks about his bond with the late director, Nishikant Kamat https://ift.tt/kGcjz9E

We loved Ajay Devgn and Tabu in Drishyam, but more we hated the character of Inspector Gaitonde, the more we loved the acting of Kamlesh Sawant. In one of his interviews with Bollywood Hungama, when asked about giving audition for the role of Inspector Gaitonde, Kamlesh revealed, “Yes, I did give audition for this film. Late director, Nishikant Kamat, had called me before for another project earlier, but I was busy working for Lakshya serial, so, unfortunately, I was not able to free my dates for his project. However, during Drishyam, I was able to get some time off from Lakshya as the crew had extended for that project. I received a call from Nishikant Kamat saying that I have been short-listed for a role and must come down for a look test. I asked him for couple of days before I came for look test, as I had to ask for permission from the respective people of my former project”.

Continuing his conversation regarding the look test, he added, “The audition took place in Pune, Kolhapur and Mumbai, where everyone was given the Canteen scene of 5 pages. Eventually, after 12 days, I received a call confirming my role in the film.

When asked about how he felt seeing himself on big screen, he said, “Every actor has their own way or style of working. Some read the scripts before they get into the act. However, I am quite opposite in this. I do not read scripts beforehand. I tend to form an image or personality of the character and scene in my head when I read the script, which could be different from that of what the director could be expecting. This leads to clash in what I am expected to give and what I tend to give in terms of performance and also it takes time for me to adapt to what is expected from my role. To avoid this, I do not read scripts beforehand. This was something Nishikant Sir was aware about as I used to do this for every project. Which is why he forcefully made me read scripts for his projects”.

Sharing his journey through the film, Kamlesh also revealed the most crucial scene of the film Drishyam. He unveiled that the scene where he mentions finding a yellow car from the lake, that prompt Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) to give a disturbed look, was one of the most important scenes of his in the entire film. It was during this incident, Inspector Gaitonde gets firm about Vijay Salgaonkar being the reason behind the occurred murder.
