Sonu Nigam is one of the greatest singers of all time and believe it or not, 2023 marks his 46th year as a live performer. The singer has been giving various interviews off late and he also recently had a rocking sold-out concert at Mumbai’s sprawling Shanmukhananda Hall. At this show, one of the first songs that Sonu Nigam sang was ‘Kahani’ from Aamir Khan’s 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha. In a recent interview, he spoke about this film and how it was targeted by the ‘boycott gang’ on social media. During an interaction with Bombay Times, Sonu Nigam credited Aamir Khan and music director Pritam Chakraborty for the soulful music in the film. He then expressed regret that Laal Singh Chaddha was “plagued by negativity”. He also added that had this negativity not been there, his two songs in the film – ‘Kahani’ and ‘Main Ki Karaan’ – would have achieved cult status, a la Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), starring Shah Rukh Khan. To quote Sonu Nigam, “The credit for Laal Singh Chaddha goes to both Aamir (Khan) and Pritam. The movie, unfortunately, was plagued by negativity. Otherwise, the songs I sang would have reached the level of Kal Ho Naa Ho. But I always say that every piece of art comes with its own destiny. Today, ‘Kahani’ and ‘Main Ki Karaan’ are a staple at my concerts.” In another interaction with Mid-Day, Sonu Nigam opened up about releasing his versions of Hanuman Chalisa, and the Mahamrityunjay Mantra. He remarked, “My mom used to [chant them]. She was a spiritual woman, and I did it for her. As far as I am concerned, I consider myself a Muslim, Christian, Jew, and Hindu. I am simply a resident of this planet.” Meanwhile, Sonu Nigam recently had a song release, that is, the title song of Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada. It was also composed by Pritam Chakraborty. The singer’s voice will also be heard in the much-awaited film Dunki, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, and starring Shah Rukh Khan.
